Read why Stephanie picked the Alzheimer’s Association:
I chose the Alzheimer’s Association because my Great Grandmother was a victim of the cruel disease dementia and it is so important to me; my family has since become very adamant about supporting Dementia and Alzheimer research. It’s such a painful disease for the sufferer and their family, you lose your loved one long before they are physical gone. This isn’t just an elderly persons disease, it can happen to people in their 30’s, 40’s and 50’s! There are no survivors of Dementia and Alzheimer, it’s an agonizingly slow process that takes away everything, from eating, talking, knowing where you live or knowing who your family is. One time when I was visiting with my Grandma, she had no idea who I was and thought my sister was me, it was so hard to watch her deteriorate and become another person.
What the Alzheimer’s Association does is provide advancement through research and promote brain health. I love learning all of things we can control to help slow down or prevent the disease. They provide a hotline, message boards and local chapters to help you find the support you need. Plus, they advocate, reaching out to educate citizens and speak out so that Alzheimer/Dementia stays current and in the news.
My husband, son and I will be walking September of this year to end Alzheimer’s in honor of Great Grandma and hope that this will encourage you to do the same!
